Bride Dessert (Gelin Tatlısı)
This recipe is again from my mom. She made this dessert for a tea party. Although I don't like desserts with syrup that much, I must admit this one was awesome.
for syrup
3 1/2 cup sugar
3 cup water
1 tsp lemon juice
for cookies
3 cup flour
1/2 cup canola oil
1/2 cup butter (almost melted)
1/2 luke warm milk
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup crushed walnut
1 tsp cinnamon
-Boil sugar and water. 5 minutes after it starts boiling, pour lemon juice and turn it off. Let it cool.
-In a bowl mix well butter, oil, baking powder, and milk.
-Add sifted flour and knead well.
-Make walnut size pieces from the dough. In your palm, first round each piece and then flatten them.
-For stuffing mix walnuts and cinnamon. Place 1 or 1/2 tsp of the stuffing in the middle of each piece. Fold it from both sides on top.
-Place them on a greased oven dish and bake at 380-390F until golden brown.
-As soon as you take them out of the oven, pour the cooled down syrup and let it soak.
-Once the little pieces soak the syrup, you can place them on a serving plate.

I think I will try this one..but i know what you mean about syrup. i preffer the crunchy baclava over the one swimming in syrup anyday lol. thanks for all ur details and the pictures burcu. my parents are egyptian but mum is originally turkish, and there is heavy turkish influence on egyptian culture and food, so the similarities are many. like i said before i am just soo excited by this site. good on you!

Hola, Simoy!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the compliments and pointing out the butter confusion. It should be 1/2 cup of butter. Hope you like the dessert.
Hi Burcu
ReplyDeleteI just returned from a fabulous week in Istanbul, where we ate almost non stop. Since then I have been googling Turkish recipes non stop so that I can recreate some of the wonderful meals we had there. Was thrilled to find your website and have been trying some of your recipes. These cookies remind me of my Grandmother's Christmas cookies. She was Greek but grew up in Turkey. We also bake the cookies stuffed with nuts and then boil them in syrup but then take them out and roll them in a mixture of walnuts/sugarand cinnamon. They are without a doubt my favorite cookie. Looking forward to trying more of your recipes
